Biography:Robert Miles
First, the Facts:
Robert Miles is a composer and producer; a pianist turned club-DJ; an artist. He is also a household name in Europe where his musical creation, "Children", has already sold in exc ess of 2 million copies and topped the national pop charts in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Denmark, and Holland. On a continent where a
variety of languages are spoken, ROBERT MILES, who was born in Switzerland, raised in Italy, and who speaks Italian and English, also speaks the other universal language that knows no borders: music.

According to BILLBOARD, "Children" is not only "a naturally infectious piece", but also "a masterful jam destined to become a classic". It owes as much to the underground dance music culture as it does to both contemporary pop and classical styles of music. Realizing and understanding this intertwining of the cutting-edge, the commercial, and the classic, Arista Records has released "Children". "Children" is the first single culled from ROBERT MILES' debut album "Dreamland," which was released in July, 1996.

A Bit of History:
The basic idea for "Children" occurred overnight. Approximately two years ago, after a night of DJing, Miles was in his home studio playing with different musical elements, attempting to synthesize them into a singular compound.

As Miles recalls, that late night/early morning, he wanted to discover a new sound that would be the antithesis to the harder and more caustic beats prevailing in the Italian clubs. "The kids we re getting worked up in the clubs. So worked up, in fact, that there were many deaths every weekend," explains Miles. "They were drinking a lot in the clubs and taking a lot of drugs then driving home, sometimes in bad weather. So this movement started an d the mothers of these kids began protesting about the situation."

Clubs and DJ's immediately responded by slowing down the musical tempos, and tempering repetitive, relentless beats with more melodious moments that were as classical as they were dramatic in their musical arrangements.

Now, About the Album:

Dreamland is a collection of 11 songs that display the album's many colorful rhythms. For the album, Miles has devised an exhilarating emotional journey by embedding gorgeous melodies and instrumentation that are as melancholic as the y are energetic.

In addition to "Children" (included on "Dreamland" in two versions: the original and the "Dream Version"), the 11-song set includes "Fable" and "Fantasya" (both featuring Fiorella Quinn on vocals), "Landscape", and "In My Dreams". The second single released from the
album is "One and One". Written by Billy Steinberg (Whitney Houston, Madonna, The Pretenders) a full-speed-ahead pop workout that features the breathy diva-esque musings of Maria Bayler.

Encompassing mid-and up-tempo, ambient, house, trance, and pop/rock sensibilities, Miles compares "Dreamland" to "a musical fairy tale. Robert Miles describes Dreamland this way: "It is a reaction against the hard-edged, high energy hubris of the techno beat, replacing it with a more laid back and melodic sound that has a universal appeal." Obvious influences range from Pink Floyd and Queen to Sting and Everything But the Girl, yet healthy doses of Giorgio Moroder and Vangelis appear. In the end it's all about the mix, which is something Robert Miles knows a thing or two about.
